Reason Book was Chosen:
C.S. Lewis has had a huge impact on my life. I've read this book a few times and want to revisit it. Last time I read it was in a pub in Oxford where Lewis and Tolkien used to hang out. I ordered a few pints of cider, sat down with this book, and promptly fell asleep. Can't wait to read it again. I'd like to read one book by Lewis every year.

My Thoughts

I’ve read Mere Christianity three times now. The last time I read it was and the Lamb and Flag pub in Oxford England on August 14, 2000. I was there studying for the summer because I wanted to be where Lewis had taught. I wanted to go to the pubs where he hung out with Tolkien. And I did. And I read this book in one of the pubs Lewis and Tolkien frequented (the Eagle and Child was undergoing a renovation at the time).

It was neat reading this one for the first time in 19 years. It had such a profound impact on me the first few times I read it (19 and 20 years ago). It was amazing to see the ideas again and see how they’ve impacted my life, my reading, and my faith.

This is one of those books that elevates. I read it and it transports me to a different place. It makes me want to live differently. With more purpose. With more faith. With more strength. It makes me want to become the type of person not just concerned with the next 50 years but with eternity.

This time reading it, the main idea that stuck out was that of soul habits. Not just daily habits to try to get more productive or successful, but soul habits that allow God to shape me into the person he wants me to be.
