My Thoughts

Economix was suggested by a good friend of mine, Josh Willis. I trust his book suggestions and this was the one he suggested from the books he read in 2017. It was great. It’s a comic book. An economic comic book and definitely my first one. It laid out a clear and concise history of the modern economy. I wish this book had been available when I was in college because this would have been a good book to read to lay the groundwork for the textbooks to follow. I would have learned a lot more from this book too. Sometimes in education, we just dive into a topic without understanding the basic principles and how we got to where we are. This book lays that foundation and it lays it in an entertaining and humorous way.

My only complaint about the book was the author’s clear bias especially in the more recent history sections. He made it clear that he was entering a more opinionated section, but it went a bit (and unnecessarily) far at times.

For those interested in further study, the end of the book contains a great reading list of economic classics and more recent critiques of USA global policy, globalization, and fiscal policy.

In my notebook for the year, I started making a list of books I would include in a hypothetical self-MBA course. This book made the cut. I recommend this to those with no understanding of the economy all the way to those who have taken multiple economic courses. There’s something for everyone to learn.
