Reason Book was Chosen:
I've been connected to Joel on Instagram since 2017. I've always been intrigued with his story and now I can learn more about it in book format. This is one of the books on my 2020 list in which the author sent it to me. I'm excited about this one.

My Thoughts

More proof that important lessons come from deep suffering. This book contains two stories of survival (fighter jet crash & cancer) and ends up covering a lot of the lessons that have showed up in a number of books for this project. For example, both authors highlight the importance of time and how a near-death experience can permanently alter how one views time. Another theme is how daily decisions and habits prepared each person for their trial and also got them through their ordeals. A third theme tied to the second is that of training one’s mind to be ready for unexpected events. As a Navy SEAL once said, “you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training.”

This was a quick read with deep lessons.
