Reason Book was Chosen:
I've never read through the entire Chronicles of Narnia series. It's time to remedy that. I may read some of these to my daughters as part of the reading project.

My Thoughts

What a finale! This books starts out with a donkey wearing a lion skin to fool others into thinking he is Aslan. Many fall for the ruse and Narnia’s downfall starts escalating rather quickly. It’s the last battle, the end of that world. Creation is reversed, the stars fall, the trees dissolve, Narnia is no more. But that’s one Narnia. The true Narnia is still there and there is a huge reunion of all of the characters from the other books. They are all encouraged to “Come further in and go further up” into this heavenly realm.

That donkey (ass) in lion’s clothing is such a good picture of our times. That leaders would take a mantle of Aslanliness (Godliness) and yet be the exact opposite. Promise freedom yet institute slavery. And all the while, not really understand the powers they are calling.

I started this reading project because I wanted to seek Truth in the best books. Many of my ideas of this journey have come from C.S. Lewis. These books gloriously capture this quest. But as C.S. Lewis warns us, the truth is not in the books themselves:

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

The Narnia Series is basically this quote in seven books of true adventure.

  • It’s an amazing series with deep meanings that resonate and are timeless. The meanings deepen and become more serious as the series goes along similar to Harry Potter. It does have a religious element to it but is very gracious and non exclusive of others in a uniquely positive way. Highly recommend for children as well as adults.
