Did you know the very first named author in history was a woman? She is the first author on my list - Enheduana. She was 1,500 years before Homer. Are you aware of any other Great Books lists that start with a woman? If you read the article, you'll see that I made a point to include women on the list that are not usually included in Great Books lists.
H hey Erik love the list quick question are you a fast reader or do you have a lot of extra time to do it? How do you get all of those books read in the timeline that you do? I myself I’m a fast reader and voracious and I’m using your list also but between work and a doctoral program it’s hard to read some of these things that are so classic so fast.
Hi Pete - I am not a fast reader. I read rather slowly and don’t have any desire to read fast. I try to wake up an hour before my family and that’s when I get the majority of my reading done. I also always carry a book with me, which leads to pockets of 5, 10, 15 minutes throughout the day where I get more reading in. I have a family, a full-time job, and another job at a bookstore, so it’s just a matter of prioritizing reading each morning. I also gave up tv and news, which added some time to my day.
Loved this! I’m working on a similar project and keep adding books to my list as I learn more about a certain time period… I call it my Western Canon project and I’ve started with Hesiod and Homer. I just finished The Iliad and feel like I’d love to reread it immediately, just as you said you did!
Hi Erik, your list of books is excellen
t, it is very prolific, and yet there are so few women on your list, not before 132…. what does this mean?

That's awesome!
My son says that he loves the Odyssey, but it always makes him wish he were reading the Iliad instead. Makes me laugh!
