This was my first time reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. It was so insightful. I really enjoyed this. It presented such a contrast between characters and what happens as one makes decisions, moral and immoral. I really appreciated Basil's character; he always saw the best in both Dorian and Lord Henry...even when they didn't deserve it. He seemed almost blind to their faults and continually implored them to make good choices. Even when they made immoral ones, he would remind them of who they were and that there were good things in them.
Then, you have the Basil's foil: Lord Henry, who was more of a devil's advocate. He knowingly planted the seed that would tempt Dorian and set him on the path he takes. His philosophy corrupted so many around him. I found myself wondering about Lord Henry's background. Did something bad happen to him? What was his upbringing? Did someone corrupt him as he corrupted others? Was he ever good to begin with? Or was Basil truly blind to their faults?
This was a wonderful read and gave me lots to meditate on.
Yeah, I found myself wanting to know more about Dorian's childhood as well and what he was like prior to this. Interesting that you bring up what Lord Henry was like during his upbringing. Some interesting ideas to ponder.
