I have been listening to the Malcolm Guite poem! It's so compelling!
Thank you for the other suggestions- it's been hard to find a good starting point on a topic that has inspired so widely (and wildly). I remember reading some books when I was young, part of Mary Stewart's Arthurian Saga, some YA books, but wasn't sure what was considered "canon" and comprehensive.
Yeah, I started with Malory before going into Guite and it really helped me. I started with Malory with almost no knowledge of the stories. I somehow missed Arthur for most of my life. Malory's work is quite large, so I focused on the stories directly related to Galahad while also reading the first set of stories to get my bearings.
Speaking of Arthur, how would you suggest starting with Arthurian lore? Maybe from a "academic" level and also from a more "approachable" level?
Sure - academic level - Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Arthur.
Approachable level - King Arthur by Roger Lancelyn Green
You may also consider starting with the new Galahad and the Grail by Malcolm Guite and getting introduced to the story through epic poetry.
