Creating Adventures for Middle Grade Readers – A Conversation with Derek Holser

The Lightglider Origins Series: A Wholesome Fantasy Book Series for Middle Grade Students

I have recently finished reading the first two books of an eventual seven-book set called the Lightglider Origins series. Author

has connected with Zach Fay, creator of the Lightgliders virtual world to pen this middle grade fantasy fiction series based upon a biblical worldview. Each book follows a different character from a variety of locations and times who enter another world called Glideon. In Glideon, they must battle machines that seek to kill and destroy all that is good and beautiful.

The First Two Books of the Lightglider Origin Series

As I mentioned to Derek in this discussion, I really enjoyed reading about how these characters would spur one another on to virtuous works. The characters are placed in difficult situations, not cookie-cutter black and white choices, but complicated, heart-wrenching circumstances. Some caused by their own decisions and others outside of their control.

Each character begins in the “real world.” Bryce starts in modern times in the United States while Tambika begins in Tanganyika (modern day Tanzania) in the year 1896. You get to know each person in their day-to-day life before they enter Glideon through a portal. Once in Glideon, time stops in their native land and they experience a set of adventures before returning to the problems they left on their way to Glideon.

This is a great series for your middle grade kids or students. They will be introduced to other authors in these books, authors like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and George MacDonald. They will also be introduced to creative and virtuous solutions out of difficult and real problems. I found my imagination stirred in these books and I look forward to reading the other 5 books in the series when they come out.

In this video, Derek shares some information about the series, plans for the remaining 5 books, and special features in the books.
