I really appreciated listening to your review of ETSIUT. I read it twice last year. I also recommend the audiobook for this title as well. It is read by the author. Listening to an author speak his story is so very powerful and this book, in particular, flows really well in audio with how it is composed. One thought, I read an interview from Daniel that he did shortly after it was published and he referenced that the story was being told through essay presentations to his classmates. IMO, this added so much context to how the story was written and presented.
Personally I related to much of Daniel’s ideas of familial myths. “Are the stories of his ancestors true?” I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, but have heard many stories and retellings of him. My grandfather invented Playdoh, I’m his namesake, but never heard the story from his lips. He passed away shortly before I was born. I think a lot of families have these types of stories of mystic that exist and are passed down through generations. How best are we to carry and retell our stories to future generations.
Hi Joe – thanks for the comment. That’s really neat about the writing as essay presentations to his classmates. I love how family myths make it easier to understand how worldwide myths come into being. And I love how Daniel played with that concept, connecting Persian Myths to his family’s myths. Lots to think about!
